REGISTRATION INFORMATION
ISHR 15TH BIENNIAL CONGRESS
Los Angeles, July 13–16, 2005
The two parts of this information sheet correspond to the two parts of the Late Registration Form:
A. ISHR Registration and Huntington Library
B. Dining and Sunday Excursions
Some of the information here is more fully explained in General Information.
A. ISHR REGISTRATION AND HUNTINGTON LIBRARY
1. Onsite Registration at USC
Registration will be in the East Lobby of Annenberg School for Communication (ASC) starting Tuesday afternoon, July 12, both to complete earlier pre-registration and to initiate late registration. Onsite late registration will not include the Huntington Library; you must pre-register if you wish to attend sessions at the Huntington Library. There will not be any registration on Wednesday, either at the Huntington itself or at USC. Registration will continue onsite at USC on Thursday and for the duration of the conference. Extra tickets for the banquet and excursions can be purchased onsite, subject to availability.
2. Conference Registration Fees. The entire fee is due in full at the time of registration:
$165 ISHR member
$215 Non-Member
$100 Graduate student
$100 Scholar from a country identified as underrepresented in ISHR
If you have paid a deposit, subtract that amount from your registration fee. Please consult the email receipt sent to you by ISHR at the time you made your payment.
3. Daily Registration at USC
“Walk-in” registration will be available for $40 USD daily at USC on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (graduate students $25 USD daily). This rate is not available for anyone who is on the conference Program. It is available only for sessions at USC. Daily or “walk-in” registration is not available for sessions at the Huntington Library.
4. Printed Book of Abstracts. All of the abstracts are available online on the conference website, and you may print out the abstracts that interest you. ISHR will not provide a printed copy of all the abstracts unless you purchase one in advance during pre-registration. Printed copies will be available at the conference for consultation. All registered participants will receive a free printed copy of the complete Program.
5. Conference Schedule:
July 12, Tuesday Arrival at University of Southern California (USC)
July 13, Wednesday Sessions at Huntington Library and Opening Reception
July 14, Thursday Sessions at USC
July 15, Friday Sessions at USC and Reception
July 16, Saturday Sessions at USC, Business Meeting, Reception and Banquet
July 17, Sunday Excursions
6. Huntington Library and Pasadena. Opening ceremonies, sessions, and reception will be at the Huntington Library and Gardens. We will provide transportation from the University of Southern California leaving at 8:00 AM. You will have two options for returning to the University of Southern California. You do not have to decide now:
(1) Return directly to the University on our buses. The University dining halls will be closed by the time buses return, and you will have to arrange for your own evening meal.
(2) Dine in the “Old Town” section of nearby Pasadena where you will find many excellent restaurants and “brew-pubs,” along with the active night life of Old Town. Our buses will be waiting for you at 10:00 PM, and if you miss the buses you will have to arrange your own return to the University. We most strongly recommend that you return on our buses.
7. Companions at the Huntington Library. We have arranged for special group rates for companions who are not registered for the conference. The group rate of $35 includes admission to the gardens and art galleries, luncheon, and transportation. Children 11 years old and under are free. Payment must be made at this time, since it will not be possible to make arrangements onsite in Los Angeles. All companions at the Huntington will be our guests at the opening reception, and we invite you to explore the Huntington Library and Gardens.
8. Scholarly Study at the Huntington Library. The Huntington welcomes all ISHR scholars to consult their extensive collections of manuscripts and rare books. You must, however, make arrangements in advance to register as a Reader, and registration will not be possible on the day of the conference. For advance registration as a Reader, contact Ms. Romaine Ahlstrom, Head of Reader Services, at rahlstrom@huntington.org.
The Huntington can help Readers find nearby housing so that they can work at the library before or after the ISHR conference; contact Ms. Susi Krasnoo, Housing Coordinator, at skrasnoo@huntington.org. It is possible to stay in Pasadena for the duration of the ISHR conference and use the bus and light rail system to travel to the University of Southern California.
B. DINING AND SUNDAY EXCURSIONS
1. Conference Banquet. Our banquet facility will seat 250 people, and we recommend early reservations. Extra tickets may be purchased during the conference if still available. We do not have reduced prices for children. Your choice of entrees will be (1) Grilled breast of chicken with Saint André cheese, pear, and caramelized leeks, or (2) vegetarian Polenta with wild mushroom marinara and grilled vegetables.
2. Meal Plan ($75). We offer a single University dining plan that will cover the following meals:
Wednesday breakfast
Thursday breakfast, lunch, dinner
Friday breakfast, lunch, dinner
Saturday breakfast, lunch
The University cannot refund you for any meals you do not take. It will be possible to purchase individual meals on a walk-in basis, but at a slightly higher rate for each meal. There is no discount for children.
3. Excursions. We have three excursions planned for Sunday. You can only choose one, since they are all at the same time. It will be possible to purchase excursion tickets during the conference.
(a) “LA in a Day” ($40). This tour covers the highlights of Los Angeles, starting with the original Spanish colonial pueblo, then Graumann’s Chinese Theatre where you can see the hand-prints of the famous in the sidewalks of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and finally the raucous life of Venice Beach on the Pacific Ocean, with dinner on your own in Santa Monica.
(b) The J. Paul Getty Museum ($20). This spectacular hilltop museum has views from the Pacific Ocean to the mountains. The original Getty Villa in Malibu is closed for renovation. The cost of this excursion is for transportation only; the Getty Museum has no admission charge. Explore the Getty.
(c) Universal Studios ($50). Tours of active sound stages, special effects, film sets, and back lots. Extensive theme park with rides, shopping, and entertainment. These are special rates for our conference; take at look at Universal Studios.
Other excursions are available through the Concierge Desk at the Radisson Hotel and the Holiday Inn. All of Los Angeles is available to the intrepid, from Disneyland to the Queen Mary and the Wild Animal Park (plus the Hollywood night life). Much information is available on the internet.
