The Joint Educational Project (JEP) and USC Readers^Plus is seeking a graduate student with at least two years to commit to a program aimed at improving K-6 grade literacy in local schools. This person will be responsible for assisting in the coordinating the USC Readers^Plus program in the Family of Five schools, recruiting and training undergraduate students to tutor one-on-one in literacy.

USC Readers^Plus is seeking a graduate student with at least one year to commit to a program aimed at providing one-on-one tutoring in mathematics at local elementary schools. This person will be responsible for training undergraduate students for tutoring, creating hands-on math lesson plans for one-on-one tutoring and group projects, and serving as an academic resource for the undergraduate tutors.

PeaceGames Coordinator: Application: Open

The PeaceGames program is a national organization that works with inner city children to develop and utilize non-violent means of communication in conflict resolution and decision making.

Pen Pal Program/ African Millennium Foundation/ USC Readers^Plus: Application: Closed

USC ReadersPlus, an America Reads/America Counts program is searching for a graduate student with at least two years to commit to the program. This person will be responsible for coordinating Literacy One, an English as a Second Language program that improves reading readiness for non-native speakers at the kindergarten level.
The Graduate coordinator, in addition, will assist in the continued development, administration, and communication efforts of the USC ReadersPlus program across the original Family of Five schools in which the program operates.

Psychology Service-Learning Consultant: Application: Closed

JEP is looking for a graduate student in Psychology to work with JEP’s Director of Academic Development and faculty in the Psychology Department to develop reflective assignments that help psychology students connect what they are learning in the classroom with what they are learning in the community through JEP.

Salvatori Community Scholar: Application: Open

The Salvatori Community Scholar(s) will work with JEP’s Director of Academic Development, USC faculty, and one or more community organizations to develop mutually beneficial service-learning projects. Projects are to be jointly determined by the needs of the organization, the academic goals of the service-learning course, and the abilities and interests of the Scholar, and might include participatory action research or direct service activities. All projects must involve undergraduate students in work that builds their knowledge and skills while supporting the agency in achieving its mission. Ideally, the service-learning projects will closely correspond to the scholarly activities of the Salvatori Community Scholar.

Science Education Collaborative Coordinator: Application: Open

This person will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the USC/JPL Science Education Collaborative (staff members from the science departments on campus and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as well as training, recruiting and placing university undergraduates for science teacher assistant positions.

Science Education Collaborative Teaching Assistant: Application: Closed

The Science Education Teaching Assistants will assist in implementing a pilot program at Weemes Elementary School that will support teachers and students in reaching the goal of implementing effective science instruction into their classrooms. The objective is that the Weemes Elementary School Science program will serve as a model for other school sites and will lead to increased science activities in all of USC’s Family of Five schools.

Service-Learning Liaison: Application: Closed

The Service-learning Liaison works with JEP’s Director of Academic Development, USC faculty (primarily in the social sciences), and community-based organizations to develop service-learning assignments that help students connect what they are learning in the classroom with what they are learning in the community.

Volunteer Opportunities: Application: Open

Literacy Project volunteers receive training in the area of literacy content, and learn how to create lesson plans that will cater to a student's individual needs and interests. Once trained, volunteers are assigned to work one hour per week with an individual student at one of the original USC "Family of Five" elementary schools (32nd Street, Foshay, Norwood, Vermont, and Weemes). Over the course of the semester, Literacy Project volunteers help children to develop effective strategies that facilitate independent reading.
