WELCOME BACK!

We hope that your semester or year overseas was an educational, fun, and maybe even life-changing experience. As hard as it might have been to adapt to a new life and culture overseas, a lot of students find that it can be equally or even more challenging to come back home. Everyone experiences some degree of reverse culture shock that often comes as a surprise, especially to people who may have felt some homesickness while they were abroad. Here are the “Top Ten Immediate Reentry Challenges” that many students face. Do any of them sound familiar?

As an Overseas Studies Alumni, there are many ways for you to stay involved in international affairs on and off campus, and plenty of opportunities for you to share your experiences abroad with others. In fact, the Office of Overseas Studies needs you to do just that! You can…

  • Complete an evaluation for your respective program, thereby providing a valuable perspective to other students thinking about going abroad.
  • Assist the Overseas Studies office at information and orientation meetings and at the study abroad fairs, and participate in dorm presentations about overseas studies at USC.
  • Write an essay/story about your experience or submit photos for publication on this web site.
  • Use the Overseas Alumni message board to stay in touch with other alumni and share information.
  • Write a story about your experience abroad and submit it to the Daily Trojan or other journals.
  • Volunteer with USC’s Office of International Services and participate in their activities for international students.
(or check out the Global Volunteer Network)
  • Investigate internship and employment opportunities overseas at the USC Career Planning and Placement Center.
  • Investigate volunteer opportunities through the USC Volunteer Center.
  • Continue your academic studies in the language and culture that you explored overseas.
  • Contact the consulate of your host country in Los Angeles to find out about programs and events.
  • Check out the USC Office of Leadership, Service and Scholars to find out about nationally competitive undergraduate or graduate scholarships for additional study or research abroad such as the Rotary, Fulbright, Rhodes, or Marshall.
  • Keep up on the news in your host country (most newspapers now have an online edition).
  • Stay in touch with the friends you made while you were overseas.
