The Color of Jewish Life
The Color of Jewish Life: Imagining Polychromy in the Art of the Ancient Synagogue
The 28th Annual Jerome Nemer Lecture will be held on Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Davidson Executive Conference Center. In this Nemer lecture, Professor Steven Fine, of Yeshiva University, breaks new ground, exploring the significance of polychromy in Jewish art of the Greco-Roman period. Professor Fine will present literary and archaeological evidence of polychromy in ancient synagogue art and suggest possible reconstructions of ancient coloration of synagogue artifacts. He will discuss the implications of polychromy for interpreting the experience of liturgy within multi-colored late antique synagogues, and the significance of this re-imagined synagogue art for the study of late antique religion.
