Funding

MIPP is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) . The project is sponsored through the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center at UCLA. MIPP is housed at the USC Annenberg School for Communication.

One out of every ten miles traveled in America is driven on California roadways. California has more people, more cars and more miles traveled than any other state. California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is dedicated to promoting, developing and organizing traffic safety programs throughout this vast system. OTS is responsible for several innovative campaigns to bring the important message of safe, responsible driving to the people of California. Past and present programs include, CADUI an innovative attempt to prevent drunk driving, the "Green Speed" campaign to promote driving at safe and sane speeds, and the "Road Back" campaign to deliver traffic safety information specific to earthquake and other crisis situations. In addition to financial support, OTS provides the Media and Injury Prevention Project with a wealth of information and knowledge gained from years of experience in promoting safe driving.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) was formed in 1970 by the Highway Safety Act. NHTSA is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic loss by setting and enforcing safety and performance standards and providing grants to state and local governments to conduct safety programs.

The Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center (SCIPRC) was developed to support a multi-disciplinary academic and community effort with the goal of understanding and controlling injury occurrence in high-risk populations. SCIPRC conducts research in four primary areas: violence, childhood, occupational and motor vehicle injuries. In addition to supporting MIPP, the center is exploring gang violence, the biopsychosocial effects of gunshot wounds, pediatric bicycle injuries, an evaluation of the motorcycle helmet law, and a host of other projects.
