Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Supplies
Our emergency preparedness program has been carefully designed to ensure that your child will be well cared for in an emergency. We have emergency supplies, including basic first aid, water and food supplies for children and staff. An emergency kit will be provided for your child. The emergency kits for children are three-day survival kits and include food rations, drinking water, a solar blanket, 12-hour light stick, wet nap hand wipes and a FEMA checklist. Additional kits are available for purchase for $9.95. These kits have a 5-year shelf life.
Parents are responsible for extra changes of clothes. These can be stored in the child's cubby or brought in a backpack each day. Please label all items.
In the Event of an Emergency
In accordance with the University Emergency Preparedness Plan, information regarding conditions will be posted at http://emergency.usc.edu, or call the Emergency Information Line at (213) 740-9233.
Emergency Contacts
In the event of an emergency, we will attempt to contact you or those listed as your emergency contacts at the telephone numbers you have provided on the Identification and Emergency Information form. It is very important that you keep this information up-to-date and notify the program director immediately of any changes. We will also initiate these contacts if you are more than half an hour late to pick up your child after closing and you have not contacted us to advise us of your change in schedule.
Should there be a significant event, we will secure your child on site or, if it is not safe for your child to remain at the location, we will relocate your child to a designated evacuation location. At UPC, this is Parking Lot 29B located on the corner of University Avenue and 27th Street directly in front of the USC Head Start facility; at HSC, Hazard Park on San Pablo Street. After your child's teachers secure your child and assess the situation, we will then attempt to contact you as quickly as possible to advise you of the status of the centers.
Please follow the emergency evacuation procedures in place in your USC department, employer, or your local community, and follow the directions of law enforcement and emergency personnel.
Parents should first attempt to contact the administrative office at (213) 743-2446 for UPC programs or (323) 442-3333 for HSC programs for status updates or alternative contact numbers. You should understand that, during emergencies, placing or receiving telephone calls may be difficult. It is important that you remain calm and not place yourself or your child unnecessarily at risk. We will take all possible measures to ensure safety and care for your child during a crisis until it is safe for you to travel to pick up your child.
