"Communication, Language, and Citizenship in the New South Africa"

The workshop led by C.R.D. Halisi, Assistant Professor of Political Science, discussed his work concerning the use of identity politics by the South African government to isolate groups, create divisions, and gain control. Suggestions for future research were made concerning the historical changes in the hegemonic structures of the South African broadcast corporationa and the recent trend to resist American popular music and instead apply indigenous languages and forms of African music to U.S. popular culture.
