CASE STUDY ABSTRACT
Presenter: Steve Lansing
"COMEXAP: The Use of Computers in Indonesia to Improve Agriculture"

Dr. Steve Lansing described his involvement with a pilot project that used computers to calculate the effects of different crop management scenarios on irrigation demand, pest population dynamics, and rice harvest in Bali. The project concluded that the traditional system, using water temples to allocate water, was more effective than the government's policy. The Balinese farmers also worked with the researchers to develop a computer application which would analyze agro- ecological data.

J. Stephen Lansing is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern California. He is presently teaching at the University of Michigan where he has a joint appointment in the Department of Anthropology and the School of Natural Resources. He is author of several books on Bali including Priests and Programmers: Technologies of Power in the Engineered Landscape of Bali.
