The Architecture Faculty
 

Students work with an internationally distinguished faculty of practicing professionals and scholarly researchers. Most are actively involved in practice or head important research programs.

The majority are active members of the American Institute of Architects, three belong to the Royal Institute of Architects, and one to the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The School has eighteen full-time faculty, who specialize in design, history, and technology. They teach in their area of specialty and each has a unique profile of creative work and/or scholarly research.

The numerous outstanding practitioners in the Southern California region make it possible for the School to recruit top professionals to teach in part time positions. Part time faculty bring topical and important new projects into the classroom.

 

Scholarship

In the last ten years, the faculty have published 91 books and hundreds of articles. Eleven faculty members currently have 27 books in progress. Faculty are represented on editorial boards of seven major journals.

 

Design

Faculty have won hundreds of design awards, including local, regional, national, and international design awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). They have also won design awards from Progressive Architecture, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The faculty's involvement in the community is reflected by the AIA Community Housing Assistance Honor Award, and the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award. Their work has been published in 45 national and international journals, including: Architecture, Architectural Design, Architectural Record, Architectural Review, Baumeister, Domus, Global Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Progressive Architecture. Faculty have shown their work in 111 competitions and exhibitions in the United States and abroad since 1983.

 

Research

Faculty are involved in active research programs in seismic design, the use of natural lighting, active and passive solar design, housing for special users (elderly, mentally and physically frail), affordable housing, urban design, architectural history, theory, and historic preservation. In this area as well, the faculty's work has been recognized by numerous awards, including awards from the AIA and Progressive Architecture.

 

The Harry and Della MacDonald Dean's Chair in Architecture

The Harry and Della MacDonald Dean's Chair stands as an enduring tribute to the MacDonald's outstanding leadership and commitment to USC's goals. The Dean's Chair will allow all deans to carry vital projects to fruition and to pursue the School's most important educational goals. The Chair will ensure that the vision of the School's founders, graduates, and donors is forever nurtured and strengthened.

Harry and Della are very special friends of the School and the University. The School of Architecture is proud that the MacDonalds will be united for generations with the accomplishments and esteem of each dean who holds the Harry and Della MacDonald Dean's Chair in Architecture at USC. Their generosity ensures that the School will continue building on its excellence.

 

Honors

The faculty have won many honors, including two recent Fulbright senior research awards and the AIA's Medal for Research. Three have been recognized as Distinguished Professors by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Seven have been named Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The percentage of full- time faculty in the School of Architecture who are either FAIA or ACSA Distinguished Professors is 44%, higher than any other school in the country.

Four of the faculty have won the Kappa Phi award for outstanding achievement in the publication of a book. Two of the faculprestigious Phity have been named Fellows of the American Academy of Rome, receiving the highly respected Rome Prize from the Academy. Faculty have been honored by receiving The Maybeck award for lifetime achievement from the California Council of the American Institute of Architects, The 25 Year Award also given by the Council, the Distinguished Service Award from the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Award of Excellence from the Cultural Heritage Commission.
