450 Fundamentals of Historic Preservation (4, Fa) This course is intended as an introduction to the field of historic preservation and serves as a prerequisite to other classes being offered by the School of Architecture as part of the Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation Program. It examines the history and philosophy of the historic preservation movement as it has evolved in Europe and the United States during the past century. Through lectures and field trips it also introduces students a broad range of legal, economic, aesthetic and technical issues associated with the preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings, landscapes and communities. Employing a series of case studies, the class studies and critiques many of the latest strategies being employed by architects, planners, preservationists, contractors, and real estate developers for the preservation, rehabilitation, and re-use of older buildings. 550 Historic Preservation Management, Planning, and Development (4, Sp) This course examines a wide variety of strategies for identifying and conserving historic and cultural properties within the legal, social, and economic framework of Southern California. It looks closely at the role of preservation in economic and community development and its relationship to public policy at the local, state, national, and international levels. 551 Conservation Methods and Materials (4, Fa) Conservation Materials and Methods offers a hands-on introduction in the latest methods being developed in the field of historic preservation to document, analyze and conserve historic building materials, furnishings and finishes. Prerequisite is ARCH 450 or permission of instruction.
