Mr. Charles H. Stoddard House
Burlingame, California

The war in Europe effected America economically, even before the country’s direct involvement and as a result, much of the Greenes’ design work performed in late 1916 never proceeded beyond preliminary sketches. Due to Charles’ relocation to Carmel-by-the-Sea and his general disinterest in the firm at this time, Henry Greene was in charge of the project. His 1916 design for the Charles H. Stoddard house is dignified, symmetrical and colonial and demonstrates Henry’s willingness to work a traditional style that suited the tastes of the client, perhaps for the survival of the firm. Despite this flexibility, the Stoddard house that was to be built in Burlingame never went beyond the design phase.
