The Agricultural Landscape
Urban agricultural gardens should be situated along freeways and public rights-of-way. They are maintained using treated water provided by the Department of Water and Power. They contain orchards of walnuts, olives, and citrus, and may also include non-edible crops for the production of fiber, soap, and dyes. The designs provide areas for raising domestic animals such as pigs and chickens, which combine nutritional value with reduction in kitchen and green waste. These gardens are created as a means to better utilize water, to provide for the maintenance of land through leasing it to the unemployed, to those in need of supplemental income, or for those who prefer to do their physical exercise outside aerobic halls, thus providing occupation for an aging and increasingly sedate population.
