born in Argentan, Normandy;

studied architecture at Caen in 1897;

went to Paris as a draftsman from 1900-02;

studied art at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs

in 1903;

influenced by Cezanne's retrospective in 1907;

Leger's Cubism differs dramatically from Braque

or Picasso;

in contrast to the flatness of their paintings,

Leger's work is made up almost entirely of cylindrical forms in agressive relief;

his experience during WWI revealed to him

the viual possibilities of machines

as the representatives of modernity;

visited USA in 1931, 1935 and 1938 before

taking refuge there from 1940 to 1945 when he

became a professor at Yale;

died in 1955.
