The Role of Your Tutor or Learning Assistant
Supplement course instruction, not replace it.
- They are here to work with you in deepening your understanding of course material and lead you to knowledge, rather than re-teach what was covered in your lecture.
Serve as a guide.
- They are here to guide you during the session. This means that you should be doing most of the talking and writing.
Help build academic skills.
- Time management, reading, writing, note-taking, studying, organization, etc.
- They are here to help you strengthen any skills that you already have and build skills that you do not have yet.
Create goals.
- And help you to work towards meeting them daily, weekly, and throughout the semester.
Help brainstorm.
- For your projects, papers, etc.
- They are NOT to give you any ideas.
Comply with NCAA, USC, and SAAS regulations.
- They must abide by the rules set by the NCAA, USC, and SAAS.
NOT the Role of Your Tutor and/or Learning Assistant
- Replace course instruction
- Do work for you
- Give his/her ideas to you
- Give answers to homework, paper, exam questions, etc.
- Do things that you can do on your own
- Do anything that can jeopardize your status of being a student-athlete by violating NCAA,
USC, and SAAS regulations
The Role of a Student-Athlete During Tutorials
- Come on time and prepared with readings, lecture notes, assignments, independent work, and any other materials.
- Put forth effort
- Ask questions when you are uncertain about material
- Participate in discussions
- Work towards meeting set goals
- LEARN!
