Wan Yan Hai, former CFR affiliated scholar from China, gave a
talk about AIDS and sexuality in China at USC. In March, he received
a fellowship from Yale University to be a "Yale World Fellow"
for the remainder of 2003. He was one of eighteen fellowship winners,
from a pool of over five hundred scholars who were nominated for the
fellowship. He joins former CFR affiliated scholar Dr. Michael Quinn,
who is also currently an affiliated scholar at Yale.
Casey Charles, professor of English at
the University of Montana and former affiliated scholar, recently published
The Sharon Kowalski Case: Lesbian and Gay Rights on Trial. A gripping
story of love and law, this book chronicles one of the true landmarks
in the fight for the rights of same-sex partners, fully framed for the
first time within its social, political, and historical contexts. Drawing
on trial transcripts, medical records, newspaper archives, and personal
interviews, Charles goes well beyond Karen Thompson’s own highly
personal account in Why Can’t Sharon Kowalski Come Home? In the
process, he brings to life emotions and personalities that dominated
the courtroom dramas and illuminates the highly contested judgments
emerging from supposedly objective authorities in journalism, medicine,
and the law.
