Curriculum 2009 SummerTIME Writing Program Curriculum
June 6 and 13, 2009 Pre-Assignment (2 pp.): Close Reading of The Bluest Eye (1970, 2007) by Toni Morrison. Due on July 1, 2009. Jose goes through this assignment with students during orientation and also models close reading through brief exercises that simulate tracking repeated words. Students learn how to connect a concrete object with an idea. Students are also debriefed about keynote speaker and are asked to prepare a question to ask her during the Q & A. Week 1 to 1.5: July 1-3 and July 6-10 Developing Assignment 1 Rough Drafts of A1 due on Friday 7/10. Instructors develop an assignment about a theme of their choosing related to the novel and distribute the assignment sheet to students on July 1. The assignment should require that students generate a 5-7 pp. thesis-driven essay that uses sources from the first half of the Seminar Reader. Students should also learn how to quote effectively from the text using MLA style and document the primary text in a work cited page. *The pre-assignment may or may not be used for Assignment 1. Instructors may decide whether the pre-assignment should serve as a rough draft of Assignment 1. Week 2: July 13-17 Revising Assignment 1 Paper due on July 17, 2008 Instructors discuss revision strategies with students and prepare them to submit their final assignments on July 17. Instructors should grade these assignments over the weekend. Week 3: July 20-24 Developing Assignment 2 Rough Drafts of A2 due July 24th Call for Papers: Student Symposium Instructors create Assignment 2 with selected excerpts from the SummerTIME Course Reader. Assignment 2 should take up some issue related to our theme: Writing the Unspoken: Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Violence. It should also provide students with the opportunity to write a 5-7 pp. thesis-driven essay that incorporates at least two sources from the second half of the Seminar Reader. Students should learn how to quote extensively from a text using a variety of styles such as block quoting, embedding and paraphrasing. They should also learn how to document sources using a works cited page. Students will have the opportunity to submit blind drafts of their symposium papers to the SummerTIME Program administration that will select four papers for the student symposium. Students who are selected will each receive a prize (probably a gift card). Instructors whose students are chosen to participate will need to help the student to prepare to deliver her/his paper within a 10-12 minute timeframe. In addition, the student participant should write a 3-4 sentence description of the essay for inclusion in a symposium program. Week 4: July 27-July 31 Revising Assignment 2 and Preparing the Portfolio Assignment 2 and the Portfolio due on July 31, 2009. Instructors will help students to finalize their second assignments for submission and inclusion in their portfolios. Please see Portfolio Guidelines for more information about the latter piece. Students turn in their portfolios on the last day of class, August 1. Instructors will need to submit grades and portfolios to the SummerTIME Program by Friday, August 7, 2009. Please note: Each final Assignment MUST be accompanied by all pre-writing material. Encourage your students to submit final drafts of A1 and A2 in two-pocket folders with pre-writing materials on one side and final drafts on the other side

Theme: Writing Yourself Into History: Youth, Identity and Power June 7, 14, and 21 2008 Pre-Assignment (2 pp.): Close Reading of Flight by Sherman Alexie Due on July 3, 2008. Jose goes through this assignment with students during orientation and also models close reading through brief exercises that simulate tracking repeated words. Week 1: July 3-July 11 Developing Assignment 1 Rough Drafts of A1 due on Friday 7/11.
