Growing Quaintness:
Traditional Governance in the Markedly New Realm of U.S. Higher Education

Since the 1966 AAUP/ACE/AGB “Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities” the size, role, and costs of U.S. higher education and the academic profession have changed appreciably. But the 36-year-old ideas about “shared governance” remain in force. The major changes since 1966 will be described and the new requirements for managing/governing institutions will be delineated, revealing the difficulties and growing quaintness of the old AAUP norm and the need for new concepts of academic governance. The author will suggest some possible directions for modernizing campus governance.
