 SAFE  

Instructions on how to fill SAFE (Smart Advisement Form with Excel)


Requirements
  • You need Excel 2000 (or versions above) to fill SAFE.
Notes
  • SAFE will assist you to select the right courses in the proper sequence for completing a BS in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. SAFE is not a substitute to an experienced student advisor, who you can meet in person in KAP 214.
  • Please report any errors/problems with SAFE forms to ceedept@usc.edu
  • For an definite source of reference on degree programs, always refer to the Degree Requirements described in the USC catalogue.
  • You enter information only in the green cells of SAFE. The blue cells are reserved for departmental use only.
  • You enter most information in SAFE through pull down menus with a list of option (click on the symbol to the right of green cells)
  • SAFE displays in red the courses that you cannot take because you do not have the required co/pre-requisites. If you still want to take that course, you will have to fill in a separate form called "Petition to Waive Class Prerequisites.
  • Before filling SAFE, check the USC schedule of classes to make sure that the courses you intend to take are indeed offered this semester.
Steps
  • Download the SAFE Excel file and open it using Excel
  • Fill in the top three cells when you satisfy the basic requirement in Math 108 and Chemistry, or if you have a junior/senior standing
  • Fill in the green cells to show the courses already taken at USC or transferred from other institutions. Fill in the cells with the year and semester # when you took the course (e.g., 20061 for Fall semester of 2006).
  • Fill in the green cells with the year and semester # when you intend to take new courses.
  • Fill in your Name, Status, Student ID and Email Address at the bottom of SAFE. Make sure to indicate your Email address.
  • If necessary, you may enter annotations in the column "Comments.
  • Save your Excel file and send it as an email attachment to ceedept@usc.edu. You may also print it for your records.
  • Within two workdays, the CEE department should reply by email to let you know whether your SAFE request has been approved or denied. You are welcome to call (213) 740 0587 or visit the student affairs office (KAP214) to check on the status of your request.
