Don Kleinmuntz, Ph. D

 

Don N. Kleinmuntz is Research Professor of Policy and Management at University of Southern California, where is affiliated with the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events and the School of Policy, Planning, and Development. Professor Kleinmuntz is also Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and a founding partner at Strata Decision Technology LLC, a ten-year old company that develops software for financial decision making, resource allocation, and business planning, with a particular focus on U.S. not-for-profit healthcare providers. Strata employs over 40 people with offices in Champaign and Chicago. Strata’s systems are used at over 1,000 healthcare provider organizations in 46 states, including leading academic medical centers and multi-hospital health systems.

Previously, Professor Kleinmuntz held faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Texas at Austin. He received a BA in statistics, MBA, and Ph.D. in business administration with a specialization in decision theory and statistics, all from the University of Chicago. He has over 25 years of experience on the use of quantitative models to improve decision making. Dr. Kleinmuntz has consulted on decision processes and decision analysis financial applications with a wide variety of corporations, public accounting firms, not-for-profit organizations, and numerous not-for-profit hospitals and healthcare systems.

Professor Kleinmuntz has received awards for both research and teaching. In 1997, he was named a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. His research concerns mathematical and computational models of decision processes, understanding how intuitive judgment affects decision analysis, resource allocation models, and applications to healthcare and homeland security. He has taught courses in decision analysis, behavioral decision theory, managerial accounting, operations research, research design, and statistics. His publications have appeared in such journals as The Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Psychological Review, Psychological Science, and System Dynamics Review. He has been an investigator on projects sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Professor Kleinmuntz is a founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Decision Analysis. Previously, he served as an Associate Editor of Management Science, on the editorial board of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and as Chair of the Publications Committee of the Society for Judgment and Decision-Making. He is an active member of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), where he has been Treasurer since 2003, and has been a member of the governing council of the INFORMS Decision Analysis Society. Dr. Kleinmuntz is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Association for Psychological Science, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the Society for Judgment and Decision Making.
