Captain's Report Colts.C.C. registered their first win for the season by beating South Bay I by 2 wickets! The victory margin should indeed have been bigger had the Colts batsman played their regular game. We were too cautious. The neutral umpire from Hollywood I did not show up and thus the two captains decided to start the game finally at 10:25 a.m. without him. On a soft wicket, I won the toss and as usual invited the opponents to bat. Venu Javarappa bowled with a lot of fire to have a wicket in his first over. The Patel brothers, Nilesh and Kiran (captain) put on 47 for the second wicket, before Swami with his prodiguous swing, clean bowled Nilesh. By the first water break another wicket had fallen and South Bay I were 61 for 3 wickets. By this time Mervyn Fernando and Swaminathan Krishnan were "warmed up" and basically ran through the rest of the batting. Mervyn Fernando had excellent figures of 4 wickets for 15 runs from 9 overs with 3 maidens. Swami had 3 for 22 off 7 overs with 1 maiden. Aravinthan Wijayachandran had 1 for 8 in his 3 overs with 1 maiden. Venu off 5 overs had 1 for 15. In the fielding department there were a few spilled chances ranging from near brilliant to easy. Ryan Jayatileke playing his first game for Colts C.C. fielded brilliantly to take an excellently judged catch at long-on; Aravinthan Wijayachandran too held a brilliant catch inches off the ground at leg-slip off Mervyn; Mustafa held a skier off Swami to dismiss Kiran Patel. Colts' batting was cautious from beginning to end. Venu Javarappa hit the first 4 of the season for Colts with a lusty pull to the mid-wicket boundary. Atul Raj had 3 4s in his knock of 18. Arvin Varma top scored for the Colts with 19. After being 40 for 2, Colts collapsed dramatically to 50 for 5 with even myself out for a duck playing the right stroke on the wrong line! Freshers Raj Sundararaman and Ryan Jayatileke (6); 3rd year players Arvin Varma and Ashwin Rao (9) did the Colts proud as they meticulously repaired the damage by bringing Colts to within 10 runs of victory. Raj was ultimately not out on a very well compiled 16 runs. Summarily, Colts C.C. kept their league streak clean - unbeaten for 15 games! Regards and have a great week! Ranesh Peiris
