For those of you who missed it, Colts yet again thrashed Hollywood II - this time by 6 wickets.
Having asked Hollywood II to bat, Colts C.C. battled gusty winds to restrict the opposition to 40 for 2, 100 for 7 and 108 all out. Swaminathan Krishnan took the last 5 wickets in his own indomitable style!
In reply Colts were humbly placed at 37/4 before the two Venkys took Hollywood II to Hollywood! Venky Panchapagesan was his old self once again with a boundary studded 50+ & Venky Kulkarni had a beligerent 20+ which included some wristy hitting! Colts got 110/4 in 19.2 overs.
In the other semifinal, Inland Empire scored 235 and restricted Anaheim to only 150.
Colts completed that rare double in winning both the league and the play-offs in their division. By hammering Inland Empire I by 4 wickets the resurgent Colts proved their resiliency and showed that team work spiced with a couple of individual performances are the right ingredients in a winning formula!!!
I lost that vital toss yet again BUT my prayer was answered in that their skipper opted to bat. Our bowling was very mediocre! Arvin Varma had an excellent first spell and Venu supported him pretty well. The introduction of a flu-affected Mervyn Fernando and Swaminathan Krishnan did not hel matters. In fact Inland Empire I incresed their run rate during this period. Spin wizard Arvindan Wijayachandran was also not effective although he really did not get hammered!
Venkatesh Panchapagesan was introduced into the attack and he responded well by taking a few wickets. I brought on myself and we "kind of" stemmed the run feast. Venu and Arvin Varma helped reduce the opponents to 174 for 9 off 35 overs - a large score by any standard! Doing the damage for Colts were Venky/P with 4 for 37 and Arvin Varma with 3 for 16!
The openers Atul Raj and Venu could not provide a good foundation, both being back in the pavilion with the score at 11 (for 2). Ashwin Rao and Venky Panchapagesan put on 94 runs for the 3rd wicket with Venky finally bowing out for 42 which included 2 sixes and 0 fours! Ashwin and Venky Kulkarni then put on 42 runs for the 4th wicket before Ashwin Rao was adjudged LBW for a match winning, well compiled 66 runs. His knock included 4 fours and 2 sixes. Two more wickets fell as Colts tried to finish it fast. Venky Kulkarni's lusty hitting made it easier for myself and Priyan to finish it off. Venky got 36 studded with 6 fours and 1 six. Priyan and Ranesh were at the wicket (0 each) with the score at 165 for 6 in the 30th over. Priyan hit 2 fours and got a 3 to complete a memorable victory for the Colts !
