About UPE
Upsilon Pi Epsilon is the first and only international honor
society for the Computing Sciences. It was founded in 1967 to recognize
scholarship and professionalism. In the years since then, over 120
institutions of higher education around the world have established to honor
their students; many chapters also honor faculty with membership.
In 1967, UPE won recognition and endorsement from the
ACM Executive Council:
The Association for Computing Machinery has endorsed the
UPE concept and has agreed to encourage its spread to other
universities through student chapters of the ACM.
In 1992, UPE received formal endorsement by the Board of
Governors of the IEEE Computer Society
moved that the Board of Governors of IEEE Computer Society
endorse Upsilon Pi Epsilon as a honor society for the
computing sciences.
The zeta chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon at University of Southern California was founded in 19??.
Membership in UPE is limited to candidates who can effectively achieve the
goals of the society:
- recognition of outstanding talent in the computing sciences
- promotion of high scholarship in the computing sciences
- establishment and maintenance of high standards
- representation of the computing sciences in
interdisciplinary communications
- encouragement of individual contributions to society
through the computing sciences

Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE)
The Computer Science Honor Society
The UPE chapter at University of Southern California is accepting
applications for membership. Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) is the only national
computer science honor society and has chapters all over the United States.
The minimum requirements for membership are as follows:
Undergraduate Students
- The student must have completed the equivalent of 64 units of college work.
- The student must have completed the equivalent of 18 units of basic computer science courses.
- The student must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- The student's GPA in computer science courses must be a 3.0 or higher.
- The student must have been at University of Southern California
for at least one semester.
Graduate Students
- The student must be a candidate for
a graduate degree in Computational Sciences program.
- The student must have completed at least 18 hours of course
work for that degree.
- The student must have a quality GPA of 3.8 or higher for courses taken
in the curriculum.

Other Possible Activitiess
Part of the excitement of being a member of UPE at USC is that you
have a say in the activities we plan. Apart from the above activities, as a
member of UPE you are welcome to propose/execute any activity. Some possible
events are:
- Fieldtrips to industry
- Tutoring projects
- Presentations at local high schools
- Technical projects
- Setting up a process for student's to find professor mentors and/or
professor's to find research assistants
- Setting up a forum for students to give presentations about topics
they are working on at work or school

Please contact Clint Chua to volunteer for above (or other) activities.
OBLIGATIONS
The only obligation is that you attend the UPE meetings that
occur while you are in school. They should happen once or, at
most, twice a quarter. Also, there may be some fund-raisers that
we might ask for help with.
BENEFITS
Benefits include the previous possible projects, any scholarships
offered by the national organization, and the yearly national convention.
Also, you can set up a valuable network of people that may help you later
in your career.
