Rafael Chabrán is currently Associate Dean for Academic Advisement,
Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages, and Project
Director for Whittier College’s U.S. Department of Education Title
V Grant. Dr. Chabrán teaches Spanish language courses at all
levels, as well as Spanish and Latin American literature, Chicano/Latino
literature, and classes dealing with the history of science and the
connections between science, literature and the humanities. He has worked
at Whittier College since 1985. Before coming to Whittier he worked
in the Department of Portuguese at Louisiana State University, Baton
Rouge. Dr. Chabrán earned a B.A. from the University of California,
Berkeley, an M.A. from San Jose State University, and a Ph.D. from the
University of California, San Diego. Chabrán is co-editor of
The Latino Encyclopedia (Marshall Cavendish), a six-volume set designed
for use by students from junior high school through college. It explores
Latino life, culture and history as well as Latino contributions to
agriculture, art, medicine, music, politics, sports and a host of other
areas. He is also one of the principal contributors for Searching for
The Secrets of Nature: The Life and works of Dr. Francisco Hernandez
(Stanford Press, 2000) and The Mexican Treasury: The Writings of Dr.
Francisco Hernandez (Stanford Press, 2000) a two volume study of the
life and works of the famous sixteenth century Spanish doctor who studied
Aztec medicinal plants in Mexico. He has also published in the areas
of History of Science, History of Medicine, History of Education in
Spain, History of Food in Spain and Mexico, History of the Spanish Press.
He has presented with the Diversity ScorecardScorecard Team at WASC
and AACU.
