The Rossier School of Education provides programs for both teaching and service credentials. Rossier programs prepare professionals to be elementary school teachers, secondary school teachers, professional school counselors, and school and district administrators. Please select from one of the links below:

Elementary School Teaching

A teacher with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential is authorized to teach grades pre-K through 12 in self-contained classrooms. The Master of Arts in Teaching: Multiple Subject Credential Program at USC prepares students to be credentialed in the State of California for elementary and middle school instruction. The program allows for classroom field experiences beginning in the first summer session and includes student teaching. The MAT can be completed in just over one year.

Secondary School Teaching

A teacher with a Single Subject Teaching Credential is authorized to teach the specific subjects named on the credential in departmentalized classrooms. A teacher authorized for single subject instruction may be assigned to teach any subject in his or her authorized field(s) at any grade level: preschool, kindergarten and grades one through twelve; or in classes organized primarily for adults. The Master of Arts in Teaching: Single Subject Credential Program at USC prepares students to be credentialed in California for single subject instruction. The program allows for classroom field experiences beginning in the first summer session and includes student teaching. The MAT can be completed in just over one year.

  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a school counseling and guidance program that includes academic, career, personal, and social development.
  • Advocate for the high academic achievement and social development of all students.
  • Provide school-wide prevention and intervention strategies and counseling services.
  • Provide consultation, training, and staff development to teachers and parents regarding students’ needs.
  • Supervise a district-approved advisory program.

A teaching credential or experience is not required.

School Administrator

The Administrative Services Credential authorizes the individual to serve in any position requiring the credential. California has a two-tier credential structure. A five-year preliminary credential is the first credential issued after an individual meets basic credential requirements; a professional clear credential is issued when all credential requirements have been completed. The professional clear credential cannot be pursued until the candidate is employed in a position requiring an administrative credential and must be completed by the end of the five year period authorized by the preliminary credential. The Rossier School offers a program leading to recommendation for the Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential. A prerequisite for admission to the Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential Program is admission to the Ed.D. program.
