Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)


USC Rossier School of EducationThe Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy is designed for people interested in working as counselors in clinics, agencies, healthcare centers, schools, and private practice. The MFT program focuses on training in working with a spectrum of personal and professional problems facing individuals and families, including relationship difficulties, family dysfunction, individual growth issues, and recovery. Students who complete this specialized professional degree program are eligible for the State of California’s Marriage and Family Therapy license. A minimum of 60 units is required.

The MFT degree program at USC is designed to meet the requirements of Sections 4980.37 and 4980.40, of the Statutes and Regulations Relating to the Practice of Marriage and Family Therapy published by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Optional Certificate in School Counseling

The School Counseling Certificate program is designed for students enrolled in the MFT program who wish to complete additional requirements to earn a USC recommendation for a Pupil Personnel Services: School Counseling Credential (P.P.S.). Students must have completed the following courses in the MFT degree program prior to admission to the School Counseling Certificate Program: EDCO 541; EDUC 500, 507, 544, 547, 570, 583, 637, and 638.

Requirements for the California Licensure of an MFT:

  • Completion of the Master's degree in an acceptable program such as USC’s
  • 3,000 hours of supervised counseling internship (1,700 of which must be completed after receipt of the degree)
  • 7 contact hours of training and course work in child abuse assessment and reporting
  • Passage of both the state written exam (multiple choice) and oral tests coordinated by the BBSE
