In order for California public school students to
succeed, our public and private colleges and universities
must share responsibility for preparing teachers who
are knowledgeable about what they teach and proficient
in how they teach. California needs to make good on the
entitlement of each child to a competent and caring teacher.

truly a unique opportunity for those who are interested
in joining the rewarding teaching profession. It is an
intensive and comprehensive opportunity for students
to become credentialed fully qualified teachers in 13
short months. Our program offers a unique theory to practice
experience for teacher candidates with field experiences
in urban schools linked to every MAT course. Our program
allows candidates to fully experience the Rossier School
of Education's Urban mission!”

Director of Undergraduate and Teacher Education Programs
As a student in the M.A.T. program, you’ll be able
to complete teaching credential requirement and obtain
an advanced degree in little more than ONE YEAR of
full-time study – that's almost half the
time that it would take for a Master's degree alone!
In addition, you’ll have significantly more field-based
experiences directly tied to coursework and have a higher
level of sophistication with using technology as an instructional
tool.
Of particular interest, with the M.A.T. you will be able
to enter the salary scale at a higher level in most school
districts.
At the Rossier School of Education, we have made it our
mission to redefine excellence in urban education. As
a student in the combined program, you will be able to
complete your teaching credential and master’s
degree in just over a year of full-time study.
The Master of Arts in Teaching and Teaching Credential
Program is an intensive, 13-month program in which students
earn both a credential and master's degree, as well as
two student teaching experiences are included in the intensive
period. The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is a professional
degree for students preparing for a career in education.
It is a post-baccalaureate program. Applicants must have
the bachelor’s degree awarded by the time the program
begins in June.
Each year, the M.A.T. program admits a new cohort of approximately
100 students. They begin the 13-month program in June and
finish the following summer. Typically, two thirds of students
pursue a multiple subject (elementary) credential and the
remainder pursues a single subject (secondary) credential.
Class size is usually limited to 25 students so that there
is ample opportunity for personalized instruction and hands-on
learning.
The M.A.T. program extends and enhances current USC Rossier
School of Education programs. It addresses the Rossier
School’s mission, and is aligned with the school’s
four themes.
- Learning represents the USC Rossier School
of Education’s core technical skill. The school’s
graduates have a deep understanding of the basic principles
of how individuals learn and how what they learn is incorporated
into their daily lives.
- Diversity is the context within which educators
operate, particularly in urban areas. The USC Rossier
School of Education seeks to understand the specific
strengths and needs of learners who differ in income,
ethnicity, gender, language proficiency, or disability
and to insure that graduates incorporate such knowledge
and skills into their practice.
- Accountability comes from determining what
should be learned and how well it has been learned. The
USC Rossier School of Education addresses indicators
of success such as systems coherence and support, evidence-based
best practices, processes of continual improvement and
organizational learning. The school’s courses and
faculty research help leaders understand who is accountable
for what at each level of the system. Accountability
also means professionals who are held accountable receive
the resources necessary to be successful.
- Leadership is ‘how’ we focus
our educational systems on learning. The USC Rossier
School of Education focuses on enhancing the skills and
knowledge of people in the organization, creating a common
culture of expectations, fostering productive relationships
within the organization, and holding individuals accountable.
Graduates of the new program will become teacher-leaders
in urban settings. They will reflect and be sensitive to
a culturally diverse community and will have specialized
and unique content knowledge that is interdisciplinary.
They will be well versed in instructionally focused accountability
practices designed to appropriately assess student performance.
Graduates of the program will be exceptionally qualified
and uniquely positioned to:
- Teach the next generation of college students; and,
- Enter the “pipeline” to advanced degrees
to become the next generation of teacher-educators.
The USC Rossier School of Education is committed to developing
teacher-leaders and to providing a pipeline for lifelong
learning for our students. The combined M.A.T. program
will not only provide preparation for students entering
the teaching profession, but students will complete an
advanced degree program that will enable them to enter
at an advanced stage of professional development that
provides both the content and pedagogical knowledge and
leadership abilities needed in contemporary educational
settings.
…
- Graduates of the program will be in high demand.
- The program is fully accredited by the California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
- This is a new, cutting edge program that will put
you at the head of the class of the new breed of California
teachers and educators.
