academy Alumni Newsletter ~
Summer 2011
Warm greetings from all of the faculty and staff at the USC Language Academy! We want to share news and updates with you about some of the fun things happening at USC and the Language Academy. Also, we'd love to hear from you or see you during our upcoming travels.
Summer Session will soon come to a close, but students at the Academy have been enjoying a wide range of activities and experiences both inside and outside of the classroom for the last 11 weeks. This summer, we have welcomed almost 250 students to the Academy, including incoming graduate students in the International Business, International Public Policy, Communication Management, and Strategic Public Relations masters programs.
In personal news, I want to share with you all that I will be leaving the Language Academy in late August to pursue a PhD in higher education and organizational change at UCLA. I am very sad to leave the Academy but am excited at this opportunity to continue my own academic pursuits. We are very excited to welcome back Jessica Stern as the new Marketing & Recruitment Specialist. She will be starting August 15, 2011 and you can read more about her in the story below.
Please don't hesitate to contact me/Jessica if you have any questions or if I can be helpful in any way. Warmest wishes for a prosperous and enjoyable summer season!

- An interview with Academy student
Miras Adilov.
by Andrew Klint
I recently sat down to talk with Miras Adilov, one of the Language Academy students from Kazakhstan. The Language Academy was excited to welcome more Kazakh students during Summer Session A 2011 than in any previous session.
What is your name and how long have you studied at the Language Academy?
My name is Miras and I have been at the Academy for just over a month. I arrived a few days before the beginning of Summer Session A.
Where are you from and how did you hear about the USC Language Academy?
I am from Aktobe, Kazakhstan. I have received a scholarship from the government for my studies here. We had the option of choosing one of nine schools in the United States, and I really wanted to be in Los Angeles, and USC was definitely my best choice.

From The Academy News, July 7, 2011
By Jason Wentao Xia
Crowded people, shouts and claps, fireworks,
and a relaxing mood for holiday—here comes the Hollywood Bowl! On Saturday, July 2nd, the Language Academy organized a wonderful trip for students to go to watch the Hollywood Fireworks Spectacular show.
For most of the students, it was the first time for them to get so close to a real
American-style show, so it
was also an opportunity to
know more about American
culture.
