Evaluation of the effects of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) vehicles in mixed traffic

The effects of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) vehicles mixed with manually driven vehicles on traffic flow characteristics and the environment are evaluated using analysis, simulations and experiments. We demonstrated that the ACC vehicles due to their smooth response by design act as filters of high acceleration vehicle response disturbance that may arise during maneuvers and lane changes resulting into smoother traffic flow and lower pollution.

Control of heavy-duty vehicles: environmental and fuel economy considerations

In this report we consider the effect of trucks equipped with adaptive cruise control systems operating in the same lanes as manually driven vehicles on traffic flow characteristics and the environment. The impact of different adaptive cruise control designs on traffic flow characteristics the environment will be evaluated. New ACC designs for trucks will be developed, by taking into account their effect on traffic flow characteristics and environment.
