Southern California Gas Company Supports Welfare-to-Work Initiative

The Southern California Gas Company has become a partner with the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) on a Welfare-to-Work Initiative — &$147;Reclaiming California's Workforce.” The Gas Company has committed $15,000 to match a $200,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration to enhance job creation efforts in California.
“The Gas Company is pleased to support CALED in making the ‘welfare-to-work’ initiative a success in California,” said Linda Douglass, regional affairs manager for Southern California Gas Company and the company's liaison with CALED. “CALED should be commended for taking a proactive, leadership role in addressing the welfare-to-work issue and for its efforts to create new solutions to statewide job creation and retention.” Recognizing that the economic growth of the state depends in part on the creation of new jobs and putting welfare recipients back to work, Southern California Gas Company, over the coming months, plans to take a more visible and proactive role in the welfare-to-work initiative, Douglass explained. “We strongly encourage other organizations to support this statewide effort.”

CALED Hires Staff for Statewide Welfare-to-Work Project

The California Association for Local Economic Development is pleased to announce the hiring of William Robert Davis as project manager for a statewide Welfare-to-Work grant, awarded by the Federal Economic Development Administration. Bill will develop a program of assistance for communities and other organizations involved with the challenges of providing job creation as a key component of welfare reform implementations.
Bill's background in research, analysis and information dissemination is well suited to providing direct technical assistance to communities seeking to strengthen their economic base. He comes to CALED from the University of Southern California School of Urban Planning and Development, where he served as Associate Director for the Center for Economic Development. He also contributed to the overall design of the Center program, policies, and strategic planning efforts. In 1995 Bill graduated with a Masters of Planning Degree from USC.

County of San Bernardino ECD Receives $15 million from Congress to Combat Neighborhood Blight Through Welfare-to-Work Initiatives

Engineered by Congressman Jerry Lewis, the $15 million of HUD Neighborhood Initiative Funds will be used to turn around neighborhoods in the cities of San Bernardino, Highland, Redlands, and surrounding unincorporated county areas. This initiative, in part, stems from work accomplished through Assemblyman Fred Aguiar's Intergovernmental Task Force on Urban Blight hearings held with Congressman Lewis and local officials last May. Our congratulations to Tom Laurin, Director of the County of San BernardinoÕs Department of Economic and Community Development.
