The USC School of Engineering Technology Transfer Center (USC ETTC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Glendale Community College (GCC) to link the two-year college with NASA's Technology Transfer program. USC ETTC is the designated NASA Far West Regional Technology Transfer Center (Far West RTTC). The agreement enables USC ETTC to provide assistance to minority student and other programs at GCC's new $2 million NASA/JPL science education center, established with legislative sponsorship and funding support by Glendale-area congressman James Rogan.
The new center will use the NASA funds to reinforce the college's science curriculum. Congressman Rogan, a former GCC instructor and student of the community college, facilitated the legislation for the center. The NASA funding was awarded to Glendale Community College for its commitment and excellence in science education.
The agreement outlined in the MOU will emphasize, among other things, Far West RTTC support to minority math and science programs in place at GCC. The USC ETTC contribution, as outlined in the MOU, will provide the following:

  • Expertise in the area of technology transfer
  • Support for the AMP (Alliance for Minority Student) transfer program
  • The use of partnership leverage for existing JPL programs
  • NASA literature to the minority outreach science services
  • Support to the various media academy obligations of GCC
  • Support to the various manufacturing obligations of GCC
Operating at the USC School of Engineering for over 25 years, the NASA Far West RTTC has continued to produce effective transfers of commercially viable technology from the federal labs to U.S. industries, and finally to the marketplace. With access to hundreds of federal, state and local databases the NASA Far West RTTC has the ability to set up contacts and facilitate the actions necessary for the transfer of federal technology to the private sector.
Ken Dozier, Executive Director, said on behalf of USC ETTC, "We've been looking for a partner to strengthen our minority outreach program and Glendale is an ideal partner. Glendale's long history of success and their expertise in minority outreach programs, such as AMP, combined with our longstanding NASA relationship, will make a great partnership." Together, Glendale Community College and the NASA Far West RTTC will combine their efforts to encourage and help minority students interested in the math and science field to further their educational studies through various minority-oriented programs.
