Computer Requirements

In order to take an online class, you will need access to:

A Computer (meeting the following standards): Either a Pentium-class personal computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98 or a Power Macintosh running System 7.5 or later. Your machine should have at least 16MB RAM, with 40 MB of free space on the hard drive. Also suggested are a CD-ROM drive and printer. It is recommended that you have access to a computer to which you can logon at your leisure, anytime, at your own pace.

Modem, DSL or Ethernet: You will need a 56 kbps modem or higher.

Internet connection: You will need to acquire your own account with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP), permitting you to gain access to the Web. You will be responsible for securing your ISP account. Communication charges you receive will be your responsibility to pay separately and are not included in your online course tuition or fees.

E-mail account and e-mail address: You will need to open an e-mail account and acquire an e-mail address that you can access anytime.

Browser: Good browsers to use are Netscape Navigator (4.08 or higher) or Microsoft's Internet Explorer (4.x or better). Plug-ins for your browser, such as Real Audio Player, Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, and Shockwave also may be needed. All are available as free downloads, and information will be given by your instructor on how to obtain them.

Word Processing Program: A word processing program, Word Perfect or MS Word, will be needed to send documents to your instructor and other students as e-mail attachments.

And most importantly, a desire to learn and self-motivation. If you still have computer related questions, visit USC's Information Services Division at http://www.usc.edu/isd/ or call their Customer Support Center during regular business hours, 213-740-5555.
