VARIATIONS IN SECONDARY CONDITIONS, RISK FACTORS AND HEALTH CARE NEEDS FOR FOUR GROUPS OF PERSONS AGING WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITY

Principal Investigator: Margaret L. Campbell, Ph.D.

Purpose

The purposes of this study are 1) to examine cross-disability variations in the "natural course" of aging with physical disability and to examine the consequences of these changes on physical health, functional status, psychological well-being, productivity and social participation; 2) to determine how these changes relate to characteristics of the onset (age at onset, severity, etc.) as well as to socio-demographic variables (income, education, ethnicity).

Methodology

A community-based survey of 650 people with a history of polio, cerebral palsy, rheumatoid arthritis or stroke.

Preliminary Results

Data have been collected for 200 persons, 65% of whom have a history of polio.
