Monika White, Ph.D.
Adjunct Associate Professor of Gerontology
Monika White has demonstrated leadership in the field of aging for almost 25 years. She has been active in ASA as a volunteer in many capacities, including as a member of the Board of Directors, as cochair in 1998 of the fourth International Conference on Long-Term Care Case Management, and in many other committee positions.
In addition, Dr. White has been a leader in the development of the care management field. She has created innovative programs, has led and participated in research projects, and has authored numerous articles. She has also created a legacy as a mentor and educator. In addition to her many publications, Monika has been a role model for many professionals. She has nurtured colleagues and students in a selfless and supportive manner. She has encouraged leadership on the part of others in the aging field. She is known around the country as an inspirational leader who believes that in giving knowledge you increase knowledge for everyone. This puts her above politics and personalities.
Dr. White earned both her master's and doctoral degrees in social work at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has extensive experience as a practitioner, educator, researcher, consultant and administrator. Since the mid-1970s, she has concentrated her work on coordinating health and community-based service delivery systems, with an emphasis on care management for older adults and their families.
A nationally recognized author and lecturer in the field of aging, Dr. White is the president and chief executive officer of the Center for Healthy Aging in Santa Monica, Calif., and an adjunct professor of gerontology at the USC Davis School of Gerontology.
The Center for Healthy Aging is a private, nonprofit agency providing health, mental health and community services to older adults and their families. As the CEO, Monika is responsible for 30 employees, 200 volunteers, several boards and committes, and a $2 million annual budget, as well as fundraising, public relations, and executive management functions.
In 1999 Monika won the Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing Association's Healthcare Advocate Award. She has lectured in Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, England and Australia. She was a member of the Robert Wood Johnson "National Committee on LTC Case Management Guidelines Project" in 1995 and served as an issue expert for the 1995 White House Conference on Aging.
A founding board member of the National Chronic Care Consortium, Monika also serves on many boards, including the board of directors of the American Society on Aging; National Association of Geriatric Care Managers; California Social Welfare Archives (president, 1999); National Academy of Certified Care Managers; National Conference of Community and Justice (NCCJ); and the Santa Monica Community College Associates.
Currently, Dr. White is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers. She also serves on the editorial boards for Family & Community Health, The Journal of Care Management, and Elderly Health Newsletter. Recent publications include Key Issues in Case Management Around the Globe (coeditor, with R. Applebaum), to be published by ASA later this year, and "Case Management," in The Continuum of Long-Term Care: An Integrated Systems Approach, second edition (C. Evashwick, ed.), published by Delmar.
