USC gerontology students have been recognized for their academic
achievement and commitment to promoting scholarship, professionalism,
friendship and services to older persons.
The students were honored May 12 at an installation ceremony for
Sigma Phi Omega, the national academic honor and professional society
in gerontology.
Each of the 14 honorees is enrolled in the Leonard Davis School
of Gerontology which, in 1980, was among the first schools to start
a chapter of Sigma Phi Omega. Another 47 USC students and alumni
previously honored were also recognized for renewing their membership
in the society.
The ceremony was led by USC chapter president Jennifer Wieckowski
and Phoebe Liebig, associate professor of gerontology, who serves
as the chapter faculty sponsor.
Membership is open to students who major or minor in gerontology
or aging studies and related fields, are in at least their second
term of enrollment and have earned a grade point average of at least
3.3 in undergraduate work or 3.5 in graduate work. Faculty, alumni,
professional and honorary memberships also are available.
Inductees include Ph.D. student Adriana Julian; spring MSG graduates
Izaro Elorduy Onaindia, Nicole Kraus, Ann Swanson and Mira Trufasiu;
MSG student Kali Peterson; spring MAG graduates Robyn Poliner and
Barbara Winard; MAG students Sandra Ferguson, Catherine Frank and
Elise Levine; and BSG students Patricia Halliwell, Catherine Mei
