Davies, who holds a joint appointment in the USC Davis School of
Gerontology and biological sciences at USC College, was honored by the
sports medicine college for a discovery he made 25 years ago showing
that free radicals are produced in exercise. Davies found that free
radicals can cause tissue damage in extreme or exhaustive exercise, or
initiate adaptation and increased endurance with exercise training.
These discoveries, noted the American College of Sports Medicine, opened
up an entirely new field of exercise science.
