Dwarfs living with Laron Syndrome in a remote corner of Ecuador could hold the key to curing cancer, according to scientists.  The dwarves, who are in proportion but grow only to an average height of 4 feet, may be resistant to cancer and diabetes, although they have tendency to develop cardiovascular diseases particularly in subjects with high fat/high sugar diets. Research Led by Valter Longo Highlighted in Science

Longo's studies on calorie restriction and longevity have suggested that fasting can strengthen cells to better withstand the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Longo and David Quinn of the Keck School of USC are preparing to recruit 12 to 18 bladder and lung cancer patients who will fast for 24, 48 or 72 hours before and just after chemotherapy as part of a clinical trial.
