Alumni Update: Where are they now?

Name: Jody Brown

Degree(s) Received: MSG

Job title: Gerontologist

Company: Hartford Customer Services Group

Location (city and state): Fort Washington, PA

Please briefly describe your position and your company:

I work 25 hours a week teaching staff about aging and business issues, I manage our Intranet site, and consult with other business departments on aging information and development issues.

Why did you choose to study gerontology at the USC Davis School?

I have been working in the gerontology field for many years and have always felt prepared by the coursework and emphasis on positive and healthy aging posited by my instructors at USC's LDSchool.

How did you learn about your current position?  Was it through an internship, a previous job, or a connection through USC?

I think it chose me; while helping my dying grandmother navigate the health care system, I felt pulled to study and learn more about aging issues and the complexity surrounding them.

Please briefly describe how the USC Davis School’s curriculum helped prepare you for your current position.

A colleague and friend from USC asked me to interview for my current position 4-1/2 years ago.

What advice would you offer to a prospective student interested in studying gerontology at USC?

Gerontology IS the future and present of society.  It makes sense to learn more about aging - there are many businesses and agencies, schools and institutions that need well-trained gerontologists!
