Alumni Update: Where are they now?
Name: Amy Eisenstein
Degree(s) Received: MAG in Gerontology
Year of Graduation: 2004
Job title: NIA Pre-Doctoral Fellow
Company: Center on Health and Aging, University of Illinois at Chicago
Location (city and state): Chicago, IL
Please briefly describe your position and your company:
I’m in my second year of the PhD program in the School of Public Health, Community Health Sciences, in Health and Aging at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
I also have a part time position as the education coordinator at Rush University Medical Center in the section of Geriatric Medicine.
Why did you choose to study gerontology at the USC Davis School?
I was working as an activity coordinator at an assisted living facility in the suburbs of Chicago. I knew I wanted to move forward with my career in the field of aging. The courses in the program at USC looked right on-target with what I wanted to learn, and I had heard nothing but good comments on the faculty at the school. The on-line program allowed me access to the faculty and the courses while maintaining my job in Chicago and staying near my family.
How did you learn about your current position? Was it through an internship, a previous job, or a connection through USC?
After completing my classes in the on-line program at USC I was feeling motivated to continue studying.
Please briefly describe how the USC Davis School’s curriculum helped prepare you for your current position.
When I began the program at UIC, I found myself ahead of the other students in the health and aging program in terms of their knowledge of the elderly.
What advice would you offer to a prospective student interested in studying gerontology at USC?
I would tell an in-coming student to take full advantage of their time in school, to use the resources that the school provides, and to be sure to introduce themselves to the faculty.
