Name: Enna Lee

Degree(s) Received: MS in Gerontology

Year of Graduation: 2006

Job title: Information and Outreach Coordinator

Company: Fairfax County Area Agency on Aging

Location (city and state): Fairfax County, VA

Please briefly describe your position and your company:

I am in charge of outreach efforts to minority older adult populations living in Fairfax County.  (see press release dated Oct, 2006 for background).  My responsibilities include supervising and supporting volunteers for our Korean Help Line, promoting this new service to the community (i.e., write press release, partner with other agencies, etc.), act as a liaison between the Fairfax County Area Agency on Aging and partners, and spearheading new outreach projects to other minority senior populations in Fairfax County.  Fairfax County AAA is an amazing agency that is able to stretch the dollar to accomplish great work.  The bulk of this agency’s manpower is carried by volunteers.  One example is the Cluster Care Volunteer Program that just received an award from the N4A for the 2006 Aging Innovations Achievement Award.  The Cluster Care Program helps to meet the everyday needs of seniors in a very cost-effective way.

Why did you choose to study gerontology at the USC Davis School?

I chose to study gerontology at USC because it was recommended by a friend and I wanted to stay in the area.

How did you learn about your current position?  Was it through an internship, a previous job, or a connection through USC?

I found the job through the Fairfax County website.  Even though I did not get the job I applied for, I asked if I could come in for an informational interview.  During the interview I found out that Fairfax County has the largest percentage of older adults, and receives the most funding for senior services.  Shortly within 2 weeks, I received a call from the Assistant Director asking me if I was interested in another position, which is the position I’m in now.

Please briefly describe how the USC Davis School’s curriculum helped prepare you for your current position.

The curriculum provided the experience in research that I needed.

What advice would you offer to a prospective student interested in studying gerontology at USC?

Prepare for your job by exploring what part of gerontology interests you, talk with your professors about your interests and their research, and talk with alumni about what they are doing.
