Russian for Heritage Speakers SLL-270a, b;
Russian for Native Speakers SLL-370

USC has a unique program for heritage speakers using special methods and materials to teach reading and literate writing. This enables students to communicate adequately in official situations, professional setting as well as use Russian for professional goals. Courses of Russian for native speakers are credited towards language requirements.

SLL-270a is specially designed for students who can speak, but cannot read or write in Russian and do not know the Russian alphabet. This course focuses on reading, writing and grammar acquisition that is essential for correct composition and basic translation. It also expands your vocabulary for everyday conversations, communication in educational sphere. After SLL-270a, you will also be able to read prose for general comprehension and details. You will be able to describe an event that happened to you or your friends in literate writing. You will learn about the history of your family in the context of Russian history and culture, we will also watch Russian films, cartoons, have cultural events and activities.

SLL-270b is designed for students who have mastered 270a or who studied for 1-3 years in a Russian school, have basic skills in reading and writing, have enough vocabulary to speak on everyday topics, but have difficulty in reading and writing and wish to communicate on a professional level. The course also acquaints the student with some of Russia's vast cultural reserves. We have discussions, watch films, have poetry lessons and other cultural activities.

SLL-370 is designed for students who have mastered 270 a and b or studied in a Russian school for more than 3 years. This course focuses on professional usage of Russian and is designed to teach students: good creative writing (working on individual mistakes, style, composition, writing professional documents); translation skills in the area of student's studies (both oral and written translation), reading professional texts and working with them (thesis, reference, review, etc), history and culture of Russia. In this course, we have many creative lessons, discuss latest films and books, and have other cultural activities.

Authentic pieces of fiction and professional books/articles.
The Oxford Russian-English and English - Russian dictionaries.

You are also encouraged to acquire a Russian-Russian dictionary.
If you are an American who has "spontaneously" acquired conversational Russian in one of the former republics of the USSR, but has had no systematic training in language classes and wants to take a "crash" course in grammar and reading, SLL-370 would be an appropriate choice.
