| Jurors’ Remarks on genomixer |
 |
| Combining sound,
graphics, and animation, Genomixer ingeniously uses the artist’s
DNA as the basis for dynamic patterns emerging from another
kind of code within the computer. This deeply layered work
invites meditation on the mingling of different codes as well
as the synergistic union of human and machine.
_ N. Katherine Hayle
Using his own genetic code as a source, stanza creates a
series of evolving visual and acoustical patterns – the
esthetics of which compete with abstract paintings and trendy
electronic music. An elegant navigation interface invites
the viewer to experience, via the web, the science fiction
recoding of the artist’s and of everyone’s genes.
With technical excellence, genomixer recombines stanza’s
subjective artistic approach with problems of political and
ethical interest.

| Jurors’ Remarks on Couple |
 |
| Couple uses realistic video techniques
to create an uncanny scenarios = interrogating the nature of
romantic partnership. Is this partnership symbiotic or parasitic,
enabling or crippling?
_ N. Katherine Hayle
Formal aspects of everyday life are key to Couple. Art direction,
casting and an unforeseen final scene create an intense,
uncanny atmosphere. With a finely calibrated eye, Sterling
Ruby and Kirsten Stoltmann speak to the machine in everyone.

| Jurors’ Remarks on faktura |
 |
Faktura creates striking animations that
render visible what otherwise we can never see—code running
within the machine.
The ever-changing organic forms fascinate with their novelty and eerie
familiarity.

Boys |

Frischkorn’s portraits of young males
playing computer games focus on the impact of audiovisual interactive
machineson perception, creating a new passivity. Or is it the
media shift from game to photography that creates the illusionof
interpassivity?
