Asserting that 'to shoot images is to capture memories; to edit images is to re-build memories; to show images is to re-present memories,' Wen-Yao Chuang traveled from her current home in the US to Taiwan, her home for 20 years and the subject of her memories. She contemplated and filmed the city for four months. In the context of the present day realı location, however, her memories became increasingly vague. Suddenlyı, she writes, 'I found myself unsure that I was familiar with this city, this land.. I realized that history itself is not the procession of memories, but a frozen point in time.'
Having studied journalism at the National Chung-Chi University in Taipei Wen-Yao Chuang is currently pursuing an MFA in the film program at the California Institute of the Arts. Her previous single-channel and video installations include Dancer in the Heart, Self Portrait, and I Heard You Looking.
