Before advancing tube technology rendered them obsolete screen savers were designed to save the screen apparently from itself. In their heyday the savers were necessary because computer screens were both threatened, and saved, by the presence of particular binary structures: presence and absence. Positing that these structures reflect the binary regimes that permeate society at large - and inspired by Barthes¹ dictum: " The antithesis is a wall without a doorway" - Matjas¹ has created a screen-saver which combines the classic Macintosh Flying Toasters¹ and the PC Flying Through Space¹.
A second-year MFA student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and three-year Resident Specialist in the Department of Cenozoic Studies at the Muscroy Natural History Foundation, Matjas¹ visual and conceptual work is unearthed through a range of forms including large-scale installations and digital media.
