James Der Derian

      James Der Derian is Research Professor of International Relations at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, where he directs the Information Technology, War and Peace Project and Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has received fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, Ford Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation for his work on war, media, and technology. His latest book is Virtuous War: Mapping the Military-Industrial-Media-Entertainment Network, and his articles on information technology and the revolution in military affairs have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Quarterly, Nation and Wired.

        Symposium Abstract: 9/11 and the Military-Industrial-Media-Entertainment Network

      If Vietnam was a television war waged in the living rooms of America, the battles of the current Global Terror War are being fought on networks that reach much more widely and deeply into everyday lives. As part of the vaunted technological revolution in military affairs, the avant garde of the Pentagon prides itself in making war as one might conduct business, from just-in-time inventories and commercial off-the-shelf equipment to network-centric warfare and full information spectrum dominance.

      From the establishment of a media war room in the Old Executive Office, to the home videos of Bin Laden, to the White House enlisting Hollywood in the war effort, to the (secret) rise and (public) fall of the Office of Strategic Influence, a multi-front infowar has been launched and a new network christened: the military-industrial-media-entertainment network (MIME-NET).
