        Symposium Abstract

Two of my earliest interactive digital artworks, "An Anecdoted Archive from the Cold War" (1993) and "[The Clearing]" (1994) came out of reflection on specific military events and their political consequences. The first is an autobiographical multi-linear database dealing with the historical inscription of Cold War ideologies encoded in official and personal artifacts and documents in my possession and dealing with my childhood in Budapest. The second , "[The Clearing]" followed around 1994 in response to the lack of a coherent news representation on the Bosnian war in Western print media. Whereas the first project used the floorplan of a museum as a metaphorical interface and organizing principle to address the narrative power of the Archive and its structure, the second emphasizes an aesthetic of machine vision and militarized looking and its integration into the games genre. I will present segments of each.
