MDA205: The American South

Internet Sites

The following sites may be of interest to you. While I have generally selected some of the better sites available, it is important to realize that Web "publishing" is extremely easy. It lacks the strenuous peer-review function of scholarly journals.

Southern Culture
The Crawdad Hole: Southern Writing and Arts
Southern Authors
William Faulkner on the Web
. . . is an excellent, although still developing, site. In addition to extensive biographical information on Faulkner, it contains a list of works with a summary/analysis, character bios, family geneologies, a map of Oxford and more, all featuring hypertext links.
Faulkner Home Page
. . . contains biographical information, as well as Faulkner's Nobel Prize acceptance speech and photos of the author and his family.
The Joel Chandler Harris Page
. . . is authored by the The Wren's Nest, Harris' house-turned-museum. The site includes a brief list of links related to Harris and his times.
Richard Wright: Black Boy
. . . was created by PBS to complement their program of the same name, a biographical documentary about Wright.
The Kate Chopin Project
. . . is a collection of Chopin's short stories with hypertext annotations.
Chopin: The Awakening and Selected Short Stories
. . . contains a full-text copy of The Awakening, among other things.
Carson McCullers
. . .
Southern Music
Southern Folklife Collection Homepage
. . . chronicles the music holdings of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Wilson Library. It also has a number of links to other sites about southern music and culture.
History of the United States and the South
WPA Life Histories Home Page
. . . is part of the American Memories digital collection from the Library of Congress. These documents, recorded as part of the WPA Federal Writers' Folklore Project from 1936 to 1940, are arranged by region and state and can be searched by the full text.
Civil War Photos
. . . is also part of the American Memories collection. The photos are arranged along a timeline of the war.
Color Photograhps from the FSA and OWI Home Page
. . . consists of photos taken between 1939 and 1945 by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OSI). The photos depict rural life and war mobilization. This site is also part of the American Memories collection.
The American Civil War Homepage
. . . the most comprehensive site about the Civil War, it contains numerous links to timelines, graphics, documentary records, bibliographies, state and battle information and more.
The American Revolution and the Struggle for Independence
. . . outlines American history from the Colonial Period until the First World War, and features hypertext and links to other, relevant sites. Although it is a work-in-progress, and it is difficult to confirm the veracity of the information provided, it is an interesting site to peruse.
