GUNNERY SERGEANT RUPERT PALMER

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

Gunnery Sergeant Palmer enlisted in the delayed entry program February of 1998 and attended boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina in July 1998.   Upon completion of recruit training Gunnery Sergeant Palmer attended Marine Combat Training in Camp Geiger, North Carolina, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was then transferred to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he attended the Motor Vehicle Operator’s Course and was assigned the 3531 Military Occupation Specialty.  In January of 1999 then Private First Class Palmer was assigned to Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, and 10th Marines. In September of 2000 Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal. Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was attached to Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion 8th Marines where he deployed with the 22nd Marine Expedition Unit. While assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines he filled the billets of vehicle operator, and dispatcher.  Upon completion of his tour with Alpha Battery, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer reported to Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines were he acted as the Regimental Commander’s Driver.
In March of 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was transferred to Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools, Camp Johnson, North Carolina where he was assigned to Logistics Operations School.  While assigned to Logistics Operations School he filled the billets of instructor, Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools Color Sergeant and Motor Transport Maintenance Instruction Company Platoon Sergeant.  In April of 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was promoted to Sergeant. While attached to Logistics Operations School he, was selected as Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for Marine Combat Service Support Schools 1st, and 2nd quarter 2003; he was also selected as Noncommissioned Officer of the quarter 3rd, and 4th quarter for Logistics Operations School of the same year.
In September of 2004, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer attended Drill Instructor School, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of Drill Instructor School, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was assigned to Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion. During his tour as a drill instructor, he filled the billets of Drill Instructor, and Senior Drill Instructor. In January 2006 he was temporarily assigned to Special Training Company where he served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Platoon Commander. During that time, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was meritoriously promoted to his the rank of Staff Sergeant. Gunnery Sergeant Palmer returned to duty with Hotel Company in November of 2006, where he was selected as Senior Drill Instructor of the quarter.
In February of 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was assigned to Support Company Marine Wing Support Squadron 373. While attached to Support Company, he filled the billets of Motor Transport Operations Chief, and Company Gunnery Sergeant.  During his assignment to Marine Wing Support Squadron 373 he participated in a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08.2. In 2010 Gunnery Sergeant Palmer deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.2.
Gunnery Sergeant Palmer was promoted to his current rank on September 1st, 2011.  His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two Gold Stars, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with four Bronze Stars. Gunnery Sergeant Palmer and his wife Nicole resided in San Diego, CA.
