The Spring semester is coming to an end and we all must say our due farewells to those seniors that have guided us, helped us, and tortured us throughout the years.  They have finished their tenure at the University of Southern California as a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp Midshipman and now, they will pursue their future endeavors.  However, I would like to take a moment and give a synopsis of their careers in the USC NROTC Battalion.



Second Lieutenant Steve Carlos was born in Torrance, California.  He graduated from Tigard High School in Tigard, Oregon.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  During his term in the Trojan Battalion Second Lieutenant Carlos has held billets such as Squad Leader, Public Affairs Officer, Company MPO, Platoon Commander, Athletics Officer, Orientation Week MPO, and Battalion Executive Officer.  While at USC, he worked at the Department of Public Safety.  He has earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship.




Ensign Lindsay Draper was born in Rota, Spain.  She graduated from Woodinville High School in Woodinville, Washington.  She began her career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  While at USC, Ensign Draper was a member of the Varsity Swim and Dive team.  During her tenure in the Trojan Battalion, She has held billets as Squad Leader, Plans Officer, Battalion Executive Officer, and Orientation Week Athletics Officer.  Ensign Draper has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.





Ensign Ron Fairbanks was born in San Diego, California.  He graduated from St. Augustine High School in San Diego, California.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Spring of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Ensign Fairbanks has held billets as Squad Leader, Training Officer, Platoon Commander, and Operations Officer.  Ensign Fairbanks has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations.





Ensign Justin Guernsey was born in Frankfurt, Germany.  He graduated from Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  While at USC, Ensign Guernsey was a brief participant on the USC Ice Hockey team.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Ensign Guernsey has held billets as Squad Leader, Company Mustering Petty Officer, and Newsletter Officer.  Ensign Guernsey has earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences.





Ensign Clifford Harlan was born in Brookings, South Dakota.  He graduated from The American Community School in Egham, England.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Ensign Harlan has held billets as Squad Leader, Community Service Officer and Platoon Commander.  Ensign Harlan has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in General Finance.





Second Lieutenant Kathryn Horgan was born in Sacramento, California.  She graduated from Loretto High School in Sacramento, California.  She began her career at the University of Southern California in the fall of 2002, and joined the Trojan Battalion in the Fall of 2003 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Third Class.  During her tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Second Lieutenant Horgan has held billets as Squad Leader, Fundraising Officer, Mustering Petty Officer, Operations Officer, and Command Master Chief.  She also worked for the Ticket Office during her four years at USC. Second Lieutenant Horgan has earned a Bachelor of the Arts in Political Science.



Ensign Todd Hutchins was born and raised in San Diego, CA.  He graduated from Carlsbad High School. He began his career at the University of Southern California in 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  During his time at USC, Ensign Hutchins was the Chairman of the International Residential College and Chief Justice of the Judicial Council.  He worked as a Resident Adviser and as an analyst for the Office of External Relations. While in the Los Angeles area, Ensign Hutchins taught economics to students at Leuzinger High School and led confirmation courses at St. Vincent de Paul Parish.   Ensign Hutchins served as the Trojan Battalion Commander, Academics Officer, Platoon Commander, Mustering Petty Officer, Alumni Affairs Officer, and Squad Leader.  Ensign Hutchins graduates magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Policy Management and Planning and a Masters of Planning in Economic Development.



Second Lieutenant Luis F. Morales was born in Los Angeles, California.  He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, California.  He then went on served in the United States Marine Corps from 1999-2003, and began his career at the University of Southern California in the fall of 2004 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Second Class.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Second Lieutenant Morales has been the recipient of numerous NROTC awards.  He has held the billets of Platoon Commander, Command Master Chief, and Battalion Adjutant.   Second Lieutenant Morales has earned a Bachelor of Arts Dregree in Political Science.



Second Lieutenant Derek Rey graduated from St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School in Vallejo, California. He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class. While at USC, Second Lieutenant Rey worked for the Department of Public Safety and the School of Policy, Planning, and Development. Second Lieutenant Rey has held billets as Squad Leader, Color Guard Commander, Plans Officer, Platoon Commander, Drill Team Commander, Battalion Operations Officer, Orientation Week Battalion Commander, and Battalion Commander. Second Lieutenant Rey graduated from Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia, during the Summer of 2005. Second Lieutenant Rey has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.



Ensign Steve Schuette was born in Carson City, Nevada.  He graduated from Irvine High School in Irvine, California.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2003 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Third Class.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Ensign Schuette has held billets such as Squad Leader, Platoon Commander, and Company Commander.  At the beginning of his junior year, Ensign Schuette was accepted into the Leventhal School of Accounting.  Ensign Schuette has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.






Ensign Woldekidan Tegegne was born in Atlanta, Georgia.  He graduated from McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Georgia.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Ensign Tegegne has held billets as Squad leader, Mustering Petty Officer, and Public Affairs Officer. Ensign Tegegne has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French.





Second Lieutenant Colt Teuscher was born in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  He graduated from Callisburg High School in Callisburg, Texas.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  While at USC, Second Lieutenant Teuscher was a member of the Trojan Rugby Team and also worked for the USC Public Safety Department.  During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, Second Lieutenant Teuscher has held billets as Company Guide, Squad Leader, and Training Officer.  Second Lieutenant Teuscher has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration concentrating in Global Management.




Ensign Christopher Tiu was born in Chicago, Illinois.  He graduated from Bonita Vista High School in Bonita, California.  He began his career at the University of Southern California in the Fall of 2002 as a USC NROTC Midshipman, Fourth Class.  While at USC, Ensign Tiu spent two semesters as a Lab Assistant for the Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory  at the Seaver Science Center , and a semster as an intern at   Jet Propulsion Laboratory as part of their Student Independent Research  Internship Program. During his tenure in the Trojan Battalion, EnsignTiu has held billets as Squad Leader, Platoon Mustering Petty Officer, and Battalion Public Affairs Officer.  Ensign Tiu has earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics.



I speak for the entire battalion when I congratulate all of the graduating senior class.  You have done what some can only dream of.  You have defined and molded yourselves into Officers of the Navy and Marine Corp.  I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors.  May you find fair winds and calm seas. Hoorah, Semper Fi, and Fight On!
