USC Job Families and Job Descriptions
The Staff Compensation Program (SCP) was implemented on the University Park Campus in March 1994 and on the Health Sciences Campus in November 1994. The listings on the following pages are categories of job families. The sub-menus display the related job families, which contain various generic job descriptions.
A major feature of the Staff Compensation Program is the generic job description format. Generic job titles and descriptions were developed for the majority of positions to improve consistency across the University. Compensation developed these job descriptions based on information provided from Position Content Questionnaires completed by USC staff for the Staff Compensation Program. Some positions at the University utilize unique job descriptions.
Job titles and descriptions summarize the key duties and responsibilities of each job at the University. These descriptions allow the University to understand and appreciate each job's uniqueness, gather competitive pay information and place the jobs within a salary structure.
Compensation considers a job description to be a "good" match for a position when the description covers at least 70% of the specified job duties. In other words:
- at least 70% of the job accountabilities found in the job description should match the individual job and be performed by the incumbent.
AND
- at least 70% of the incumbent's time must be spent performing the selected job accountabilities (e.g. 70%=job description and 30%=Addendum Form).
AND
- at least 70% of the selected job accountabilities must be essential.
All job accountabilities on the job description should reflect the percentage of time the incumbent spends performing them. The percentages assigned to the job accountabilities on a job description should total 100%. All job accountabilities should be designated as "essential", "marginal" or "not applicable."
Compensation reviews, creates and updates job descriptions periodically based on the needs of the University community and/or to ensure consistency. Each job description has a Compensation approval date in the heading, which reflects the date the final version was created.
Job descriptions may be downloaded and formatted for posting positions, however please do not add to, delete from or alter them in any way.
Addendum Form
An Addendum form may be used to tailor a job description to individual specifications found in a position. Units may utilize an Addendum form in conjunction with many of the generic job descriptions to assist in the recruitment process. Some unique position attributes that can not be captured in a generic job description can be addressed in an Addendum form. On the Addendum form units may describe position specific information in the job summary and any additional job accountabilities and qualifications. The required qualifications found on a job description can not be changed on the Addendum form (e.g. minimum education, minimum experience). Job accountabilities listed on an Addendum form may not be more than 30% of the job accountabilities.
