Signage

The City of Los Angeles Municipal Code sets forth specific requirements (in some cases including permits) governing signage. In addition, the university has established additional requirements to ensure that the campus environment remains aesthetically pleasing, that signs are safely installed and that campus buildings are not damaged by sign installations. This includes requirements specified under the University Park Specific Plan ("Specific Plan"). In order to meet these interests, all signs must be reviewed and approved by the university prior to ordering a sign from a sign company, obtaining a permit from the city (if required), and/or installing a sign. This policy applies to signs installed on or after November 1, 2010.

    Banners are the most common type of sign used on campus, and will be reviewed for the following information:

  1. The banner must be limited in size to no greater than two square feet of area for each lineal foot of building frontage. (This is the current code standard; exceptions may be possible. Contact Real Estate and Asset Management.)
  2. The banner cannot be installed for more than 90 days.
  3. The banner should not contain a commercial message and should not be for building identification.

    All other sign requests will be reviewed based on the type of sign and the corresponding provisions of the city's sign ordinance, the Specific Plan and/or other university requirements. In order to obtain campus approval, signs must first be reviewed by Real Estate and Asset Management (for review of property and any potential leases or contracts related to or affected by the sign, and review of compliance with sign provisions of both the city and the university). Real Estate and Asset Management will also consult with the following departments:

  1. Capital Construction Development: for university architect review, review of proposed method of installation, and coordination with Facilities Management Services to oversee installation.
  2. Communications: for review of appropriate use of university logos and graphics.
  3. Provost's office: for final university approval.

Requests for sign approval should be submitted to Real Estate and Asset Management. Requests should include proposed location of sign, size and dimensions of sign, content of sign, and image of sign or alternatives.
